In this section of the book many different things are happening. Take a moment to reflect.
If you are interested in sharing your thoughts, pick from one of the questions below. Or share your own thoughts!
(1) When Julian asked Auggie about his favorite Star Wars character, the teacher did not know that Julian was being mean to Auggie. If you were in Auggie's class and knew Julian was being mean, what would you have done?
(2) Mr. Browne is excited to teach his class about precepts. He describes precepts as "anything that helps guides us when making decisions about really important things". What is a precept that you use currently in your own life?
Your dog is so cute!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I love dogs so much that when I'm older I want 6 dogs and I like the type of dog Miss Weinstein has.
DeleteThanks friends! Let's chat about dogs together in school and about Wonder on the blog : )
DeleteWow Miss Weinstein! Those are two really big questions and I want to answer them both. Question #1 really stand out to me since this week Village is banning together to stop bullying. I feel like Julian is a bully and that the people who know what he is doing, and do nothing to prevent it, are the bystanders that allow Julian to treat August this way. Sometimes I wonder if the person who seems bullying and does thing about it is worse than the person doing the bullying. What do you think Griffins?
ReplyDeleteI hope I can come up with a good answer for those questions you gave us.
DeleteThis is Joshua Alenier. I think we should stand up to a bully. I would stand up for August so he would want to stay in school
DeleteHi Josh!
DeleteI am thrilled to hear that you would be an upstander! It is very important that we stick together and take care of one another. I think it is one of the reasons I REALLY like Summer as a character because she is willing to be friends with someone regardless of what everyone else thinks!
The part that is my favorite on pages 41-53 (The Summer Table) is when August meets Summer at the lunch table, and Summer is so nice to him, and says the table they were sitting on (Nobody sat at that table because they thought Auggie had a contagues disease) so they said only people with summer names can join the table, this part is my favorite because its nice for him to have a person to talk to if your having troubles. And your dog is soo cute.
ReplyDeleteMine too! I think that pg. 41- 53 is the best part because it's when he meets his English Teacher and makes a new friend Summer who seems to be really nice to August.
DeleteSummer seems like such a genuine friend.
DeleteIt is very interesting to think about the person who stands up for someone being bullied. They really put themselves out there and should be recognized for standing up for someone else. However, the opposite should happen for those who do not stand up for others being bullied. They should feel pretty badly about themselves and make a commitment to stand up to someone else the next time they see something. Get a prepared statement and be ready to protect others being treated so poorly. I would want someone to do it for me or my children. One precept I always think about it, WHAT WOULD I DO IN THIS SITUATION? OR I TRY TO PUT MYSELF IN THE OTHER'S SHOES FOR A BIT AND THINK ABOUT HOW I WOULD FEEL. Is that a precept? Keep reading Griffins and parents! This book was life changing for me!
ReplyDeleteif I was in August's class I would raise my hand and tell the teacher that Julian was trying to be mean. By: Colton Kielty
ReplyDeleteif I was in August's class I would raise my Hand Tell the teacher that Julian was trying to be mean and to also tell August what was really happening and That Julian was acsoly being mean.
DeleteFor # 2 I mostly use Family, Pets and who I am.
DeleteHello Colton and Jillian! I agree with you both. As a teacher and a person it really annoyed me that no one stood up for Auggie. I would hope, that students would stand up for each other and tell the teacher because what Julian did is NOT right! My good friend Mrs. Colucci would say that Julian has bad character traits.
DeleteA precept I use is treat others they way I want to be treated, which is also known as the Golden Rule.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Kylie! And if you do you will be very happy.
DeleteYour dog is so cute.
ReplyDeleteMy precept is to try to have fun with every part of my life.
ReplyDeleteYes! Make the best of every situation!
DeletePhilip, I love that precept. I agree wholeheartedly!
Deletesumer is so nice
ReplyDeleteI agree Michael! What about Summer makes you think she is nice?
DeleteI'm glad August met Summer, She is so nice.
ReplyDeleteQ1 I would be a little embarrassed and stand up for myself and say " Stop being mean to me Jullian!" I would be embarrassed because the class might think its funny and laugh at me. Q2 A precept that I live by is the golden rule.
ReplyDeleteJack, I agree. It can be hard to stand up for yourself sometimes, but is always worth it.
DeleteLove that you treat others the way you want to be treated.
Q1 I would go up to the teacher after the period and tell the teacher that Julian was being mean and making fun of August's face.
ReplyDeleteQ2 A precept, to have fun in life.
Dallas...
Delete1 - I think that is so brave of you. It would take courage for me to tell a teacher that they didn't know that a student has being mean because they did not understand the movie reference. So proud that you would have made that choice.
2- Nice precept! Hope you are having fun today!
I think summer is one of those friends that you can trust. I think in Summers mind her precept is be kind in life no matter what
ReplyDeleteAnd what a great precept to live by!
DeleteOne precept everyone should use on their life is to think about what you are saying before you speak. For instance, Julian should have thought about what he said to August with the Darth Sidious joke. First things first, August could have just told the teacher and Julian could've been in big trouble. Also, If the the teacher knew what the joke was and how it referenced Auggie's face, Julian could be in trouble. That is why you should always think about what you are saying before you speak.
ReplyDeleteI agree Patrick. Unfortunately, even if Julian thought about it, I think he might've still said it because he seems to be going out of his way to be unkind to August.
