When I read page 29, when Julian asked Auggie what was wrong with his face and if he was in a fire, I just wanted to stand up to Julian and tell him how rude it is to say that. I wish Julian would just imagine what he would feel like if someone said that to him.
Hello ladies- I agree! Julian was not being very kind when said that. I think there is a kinder way to ask Auggie about his past. I don't think it's rude to inquire, but there are better ways to do so.
The part that I found that was exiting is the part that Auggie enters his new school, because its just so greatfull that he finally goes to meet new people, and also exiting because he is finally friends with Jack & Charlote and he doesn't have to worry about being lonely.
I LOVE the way that Mrs. Kehoe read aloud. She read with such great expression like a storyteller. It really helped me to picture what Auggie was describing. GREAT job Mrs. Kehoe!
julian is so mean he said that auggie looked like he was in a fire. on the other hand charlotte and jack were nicer and charlotte was talking to auggie and Jack sat next to auggie in class and nobody was sitting next to auggie.
I predict that Henry will be mean to Auggie because he put his backpack between him and Auggie and looked very mad when he had to sit next to Auggie. I hope Auggie makes some friends.
When reading this section of the story, I can tell that Julian was not a nice kid. For instance, Julian asked August what was wrong with his face and did he get into a fire. If I was August I would feel really sad and lose all my confidence when talking to people in the new school. I think Julian made a impulsive decision when asked August what happened to his face. I really think he should of thought about it better and chose nicer words to say to August.
I agree that his question was rather impulsive and inconsiderate. I think it would be okay to have an open conversation with August about the way he looks, but in a kinder way. However, he should get to know him more first and be more comfortable together before they have that conversation.
I really feel bad for Auggie because all he wants is to be treated like a normal kid, but some of the kids in his class are blocking him out like he's some kind of monster. I especially felt bad when Julian asked him if he had been in a fire. That was so offensive and if I were him I would've started to cry. Thankfully, there are some nice people like Charlotte and Jack Will who don't care about what he looks like. This made me think of a quote by Leo Durocher. He was the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940's. His quote was, "I don't care if the guy is yellow or black, or has stripes like a zebra. I'm the manager of this team and I say he plays." He was talking about Jackie Robinson. He didn't care about the way he looked, only about his talent. Similarly, I think that more of the students shouldn't care about what Auggie looks like, and judge him on his character, not his appearance.
Wow Emma! Thank you so much for sharing this response and what a great connection you made. First off, I probably would've cried too. The fact that he didn't cry shows how brave he is, or sadly how used to it he is. I think of how many surgeries he has had to endure and what life must be like as August Pullman. His outlook on life must be so unique and I agree that the kids should get to know who he truly is instead of judging him on his appearance. They probably could learn a lot from him! Unfortunately, judging people based on appearance (like August and Jackie Robinson) is something that is still done all too often. Hopefully Village as a community can pledge to always be open-minded and kind.
Although August is sad and nervous, It makes me happy to know that kids like Charlotte and Jack Will are there for him and will stand up for him. Charlotte seems somewhat overprotective, but in a good way. Jack Will treats August like a normal kid which August deserves. Jack Will doesn't focus on the outside, but how August is on the inside and that makes me happy.
It was really mean for Julian to say "Whats the deal with your face i mean were you in a fire. Jack and Charlotte to say to not say it because it was rude

ReplyDeleteGood point, I would also do that, because its not nice to do that to a person that is different.

DeleteThe story gets more and more and more exiting as it keeps going!! I cant wait till next Monday!!
ReplyDeleteWhat specifically are you finding more exciting? Is there a particular part? Just wondering.

ReplyDeleteLove the book so far
ReplyDeleteIs Augustut going to make friends?
ReplyDeleteaugust is gonna make acople of friends because someone might look what is in the inside of him not what is on the outside
ReplyDeleteI agree Micheal because someone might look like a scary mean person but they might be really nice in the inside.
DeleteThat’s true Will, hopefully the kids in Auggie’s new school will look past his outer appearance and see what he is like on the inside.
DeleteEmily Graham says "I would feel really scared because I would feel like everyone would make fun of me."
ReplyDeleteI finished up to page 40. I felt scared on my first day too.
ReplyDeleteThe first day of school can be nerve wracking for anyone, imagine having never been in school before. You don’t even know what to expect at all.

DeleteI think that August is going to be nervous when he has to talk in front of the class.
